Wall Area Calculator with Opening Deductions

Calculate net wall, floor or ceiling area with door and window deductions, waste allowance notes and formula-based construction planning.

Estimation Inputs

Enter measurements in the selected display units. The calculator converts them to canonical formula units before running the estimate.
m

Total horizontal boundary length.

m

Vertical wall height, ceiling width or floor width.

Calculation guide and formulas

Use this rectangular area calculator to estimate net surface area for walls, floors and ceilings. Deducting doors, windows and built-ins helps reduce excess paint, tile, plaster and cladding purchases.

Net Area = (Length × Width) - Sum(Opening Width × Opening Height)

Worked example

For a wall 5.0 m long and 3.0 m high, gross area is 15.0 m². A 1.0 m × 2.1 m door deducts 2.1 m², so net wall area is 12.9 m² before waste allowance.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: Why deduct openings from wall area calculations?

A: Openings reduce the real surface area. Deducting doors and windows prevents over-ordering paint, tile, plaster or wall panels.

  • Q: What waste margin should I add to rectangular area estimates?

A: Use about 5% waste for simple rectangular surfaces and 10% or more for irregular rooms, complex cuts or fragile finishes.
