Calculation guide and formulas
Use this tile calculator to plan floor tile purchases with tile size, grout joint width, tiles per box, adhesive thickness and waste percentage.
Worked example
A 20 m² floor using 60 × 60 cm tiles with 3 mm grout needs about 55 tiles before waste. With 10% waste, order 61 tiles, or 16 boxes when each box contains 4 tiles.
Frequently asked questions
Q: How much tile waste should I include?
A: For straight layouts use about 10%. Diagonal layouts, small rooms or patterned tile work may need 12% to 15%.
Q: Does grout spacing change tile quantity?
A: Yes. Grout spacing slightly increases the nominal coverage of each tile, which affects the final count and box estimate.
