Calculation guide and formulas

Use this brick masonry calculator to estimate brick or block quantities and mortar needs from wall volume, brick size, joint thickness and waste percentage.

Nominal Brick Volume = (L + Joint) × (W + Joint) × (H + Joint); Bricks = ceil(Wall Volume / Nominal Brick Volume)

Worked example

A 1.0 m³ wall using 190 × 90 × 90 mm bricks with 10 mm joints has a nominal brick volume of 0.002 m³ and needs about 500 bricks before waste.

Frequently asked questions

  • Q: What is nominal brick size?

    A: Nominal brick size includes the mortar joint. A 190 × 90 × 90 mm brick with a 10 mm joint becomes 200 × 100 × 100 mm nominal size.

  • Q: How much brick waste should I allow?

A: Use 8% to 10% for normal masonry work. Complex corners, transport breakage and cuts can require more.
